Kelly Schultz - Music Director, Concert Band ConductorKelly Schultz received a bachelor of music education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, she received a master of music education with a minor in conducting from the University of Colorado-Boulder. While in Boulder, she had the privilege of studying with Dr. James Austin, conducting guru Allan McMurray and Dr. Mallory Thompson.
Ms. Schultz has had the good fortune to guest conduct area school groups, as well as guest conduct the Suburban Concert Band. Her past professional affiliations include Music Educators National Conference and Collegiate Band Directors National Association.
Ms. Schultz is currently teaching strings and Suzuki in four West Allis Schools. Previously, she taught at Nathan Hale High School and was an instrumental music teacher in the Turtle Lake School District.
Robert Rothwell is a graduate of UW-M and he earned his master degree from Northwestern University. He taught for 29 years at Mt. Prospect, Illinois. Mr. Rothwell plays professionally on both the piano and French horn. A private student of Henry Canitz, he played in the Milwaukee Pops Youth Band. Now retired, he plays in many bands and orchestras, including the Suburban Concert Band and has been the bridge of this organization this year as the directors have changed. He has twice been nominated for the Outstanding Teacher Award.
Eric Skogg enjoys the opportunity to direct the West Allis Suburban Jazz Band. Eric earned his music education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, specializing in instrumental music performance in both concert wind ensemble and jazz repertoires . His passion is to share music through teaching. Directing the jazz band gives him the opportunity to share his knowledge of jazz and Jazz Band music with the members of the group. Eric also provides private music instruction on the piano and trumpet to students ranging in age from grade school through adult. He also performs professionally on both piano and the trumpet. Eric managed and performed with his variety band "Nights in the City" for over 25 years. He currently performs with the big band "Command Performance" and directs the contemporary Christian music group "Leap of Faith." Eric and his wife Debbie have two children, who are also actively involved in music.
Jerry Johanning is a native of Racine, Wisconsin. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1958 and taught music in that area for 6 years. He then moved to Belvidere, Illinois where he had the high school band for the next 15 years. While living in Belvidere he earned a Master's Degree in Music Education from Northern Illinois University. In 1979, he and his family moved to Minocqua, Wisconsin where he directed the high school band for three years at Northland Lutheran High School in Merrill, Wisconsin. In 1993 he directed grade school in band for Wisconsin Lutheran High School and retired from teaching in 2000. He is currently employed at Cascio Interstate Music in the woodwind and brass repair department. He currently plays trumpet and euphonium in several community bands such as the Oconomowoc Legion Band, the First Brigade Band and the Suburban Concert Band.
Steve Streator was conductor of the Suburban Concert Band from 2007-2009. He was born in Menomonee Falls, WI and attended high school at Waukesha South High School while participating as a saxophonist in award winning concert, jazz and marching bands and graduated in 1993. He then received a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay graduating in 1999 earning an all ages instrumental and general music teaching license. He most recently taught instrumental and general music at North Cape Elementary School in Franksville, WI and Washington Elementary School in Waterford, WI teaching grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Mr. Streator is happily married to Jill, a great saxophone player and private instructor, and has two children, Emilia and Brennan, who are future musicians!
Henry Canitz is a product of Wisconsin. He was born in Milwaukee and attended Milwaukee schools. He has also lived in New Berlin and West Bend. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from UW-Milwaukee and his Masters Degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois.
He taught music in Milwaukee and West Allis and his students achieved numerous outstanding awards. In 1959 he organized the Milwaukee Pops Youth Band which he directed for 31 years. In 1985 he took over the directorship of the outstanding Suburban Concert Band. As of 2005, this is his 20th year with the band, and his 55th year as a director. He has received many awards, including the National Band Association's "Citation of Excellence" Award. In addition to this he managed, with the help of his wife Arlene, to raise seven outstanding children.
